How to refocus your project onto value

- Presentation by Jed Simms at PMAsia, Singapore, 2008

In the next 30-40 minutes, hundreds of new projects will be started across the world and millions of existing projects will be worked on. And what we know for certain is that the majority of them will fail on one dimension or another. Some will be late, some over budget, some both, some not to specification and some will fail altogether. But the most common area of failure is the failure to fully realize the desired business outcomes, benefits and value. On time, on budget and to specification delivered projects can still thwart the achievement of the desired business outcomes because they were poorly conceived and defined at the outset.

PMBOK, Prince2, JAD, Agile development, Out-of-the-box systems implementation and so on, have not addressed the root problems as measured by the resultant (lack of) success rate. They have focused on ‘how we do projects’, but the problem is in the (lack of) focus of our projects.

Value Delivery Management and how to refocus your projects onto value delivery, directly impacts the success rate, enabling you to deliver successfully 19 out of 20 projects.
